Check a local media file
Choose a video or audio file you already have. This checker reads the metadata in your browser and does not upload the selected file. It reports what the browser can read, not a guarantee that the whole file is complete or safe.
Metadata reported by this browser
- File name
- File size
- Media type
- Duration
- Dimensions
Try an owned example
Download our one-second demo MP4, then select it above. It is a plain blue 320 × 180 video with a quiet synthetic tone, generated for this guide; it is not a downloaded social-media clip. Nothing plays automatically.
What the results mean
- File size: the number of bytes on your device. A larger file does not automatically mean a better image.
- Duration: the time stored in the metadata. A damaged file can report a duration even if playback fails later.
- Dimensions: the encoded picture width and height, not the physical size of your phone screen.
- Media type: a browser-provided label such as video/mp4. It does not identify every codec, audio track or bitrate.
What this checker cannot verify
It does not scan for malware, recover a broken download, certify copyright permission or compare the file with an online original. Browser codec support differs, so a file that fails here may work in another trusted player. A file that loads here can still fail during playback. Check the beginning, middle and end in your player.
If the file type is missing or the metadata cannot be decoded, retain the original and inspect a copy with a trusted desktop application. Do not change only the filename extension and expect conversion. See containers and codecs and download troubleshooting.
Keep a file-check record
Download the reusable file-check checklist to record the source, browser download status, metadata and playback result. It is a plain text worksheet you fill in yourself; it contains no information about your selected file.
Check the beginning, middle and end of playback and note picture and sound separately. Keep a record for each file version so a successful preview does not get mistaken for a completed backup.
Privacy and implementation
The script uses a temporary browser object URL and releases it after inspection or an error. It makes no file-upload request, creates no account and stores no inspection history. Analytics and advertising scripts are not loaded on this checker page. Normal page requests can still appear in hosting logs; see the Privacy Policy.
