Before Saving or Reusing a Reel: A Permission Checklist

There is no universal “personal use means legal” rule here

Whether you may save or reuse a video depends on the material, applicable law, platform conditions and your intended action. This is general information, not a legal opinion about your situation. A successful request on this website does not establish permission.

Separate permission to access a post from permission to copy, edit, distribute or use it commercially. Public visibility, a creator credit or the absence of a watermark does not answer all of those questions.

Write down the intended use

• What exact clip or segment do you need?
• Are you preserving your own work, sharing with a collaborator or publishing a new version?
• Where will the result appear, for how long and to which audience?
• Does the use involve advertising, sponsorship or another commercial purpose?
• Who controls the video, music, supplied footage and other relevant components?

These questions help a rights holder give a specific answer. “Can I use this?” may leave an important disagreement about platform, audience or editing scope.

Keep the permission with the file

Retain the source URL, creator identity, agreed use, date and any license conditions alongside the project. If a license requires credit, record the required wording. Credit can be a condition of permission; it is not a substitute for obtaining permission where it is needed.

If the video is yours, check whether included music or third-party assets have separate restrictions. Owning the camera recording does not necessarily resolve every component's rights.

Do not turn an exception into a shortcut

The U.S. Copyright Office describes fair use as case-specific. Its guidance is not a worldwide authorization for personal downloads or reposts. If you rely on an exception or face a consequential dispute, obtain advice for the relevant jurisdiction and facts.

Use official creator exports or ask for an authorized original when possible. Respect access and download controls; this site does not grant a platform license.
