Back Up Your Own YouTube Short and Check the Portrait Export

Use your own master before a processed copy

For a Short you created, preserve the final editing export, project file and source clips. Those files serve different purposes: the export is ready for playback, the project preserves edit decisions, and the source clips allow a new edit. Keeping only the online Short can lose that flexibility.

The Shorts tool accepts individual permitted Shorts links, but does not guarantee access or remove every watermark embedded in the picture. A Short belonging to someone else requires appropriate permission and compliance with the provider's restrictions.

A portrait-file acceptance check

1. Open the saved copy from its real folder, not from an online preview.
2. Check width and height. A 1080 × 1920 example is portrait 9:16; a 1920 × 1080 example is landscape. These numbers illustrate geometry, not a guaranteed export.
3. Watch for rotation metadata: verify the actual presentation in the player where you intend to use it.
4. Read captions near the edges and inspect the first and last frames. A portrait crop can remove information even if the duration is unchanged.
5. Listen at a modest volume and check that the permitted audio you need is present. Do not add a replacement music track without checking rights.

Find the file on a phone

A browser's download location and a photo library are separate. Apple's linked guidance explains finding downloaded files in Files; Android's guidance explains finding files through the device's file-management app. Check the completed download entry and filename first. Do not download a second copy merely because it has not appeared in a gallery.

If your device offers a media-library import, verify the imported copy before deleting the file. Cloud-backed folders may need connectivity to make a local copy available. The precise import controls vary by app and device; no universal one-tap Photos workflow is promised.

Keep the rights and version notes

Store the project date, export settings and permissions for music or other included media with the master.
